SUMMARY:Studebaker Housing: The Citizens Home Company
DESCRIPTION:In the late 19th century\, planned communities were growing in popularity throughout the US. For example\, George Pullman wanted to attract and retain talented workers for his business in Chicago. He believed that providing a quality standard of living would keep workers happy\, productive\, and less likely to strike. \nSouth Bend did not have anything quite that organized; instead industry leaders used residential new construction to compete for workers. In 1919 the Citizens Home Company was formed as part of the Studebaker Corporations’ housing company. \nAdam Toering\, Historic Preservation Administrator with the City of South Bend\, will talk about the various neighborhoods that were built by the Citizens Home Company\, providing quality worker housing for Studebaker employees at a discounted price. The Rev. Dr. Charles A. Lippincott\, a former First Presbyterian Church minister\, hung up the frock and went to work for Studebaker labor relations\, spearheading this exciting program. \nABOUT SPEAKER SERIES\nThe Studebaker Museum Speaker Series\, presented by the Campisi Family Education Fund\, is held in the Wiekamp Auditorium. SUMMARY:Chicago's Historic Motor Row District 1905 - 1936
DESCRIPTION:This talk is rescheduled from its original July date. \nChicago’s Historic Motor Row District\, is home to the largest\, intact\, early “motor colony” in the United States.  Primarily located on south Michigan Avenue\, it was designated as a Chicago Landmark on December 13\, 2000\, and added to the US National Register of Historic Places on November 18\, 2002.  At its peak\, as many as 116 different makes of automobiles were sold and repaired on Motor Row!  The names of the early auto companies – such as Ford\, Buick\, Hudson\, Cadillac\, Locomobile\, Marmon\, and Premier – are still visible today on the building’s brick and terra cotta facades located on south Michigan Avenue. \nYou will learn about the early development of the American automobile industry\, the top flight architects who designed the elaborate automobile showrooms on Motor Row\, several of the 116 automobile companies located there\, and the automobiles that you would find for sale in those showrooms. \n \nABOUT OUR SPEAKER\nBarbara J. Barrett is a History Edutainment (Educational Entertainment) Speaker. She holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from the University of Illinois and a Master in Public Administration (MPA) degree from Roosevelt University. The Young Judges are guided through the show field as a group to pre-selected show cars and interact with owners\, allowing the judges to learn details\, history and fun facts about each. A simplified score card that highlights five basic categories and is rated on a scale of 1-to-5 is used.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a race like no other! The Great Race is the world’s premiere old car rally\, and the Studebaker National Museum and The History Museum will serve as a lunch checkpoint for the more than 120 vintage automobiles and their teams as a part of the Race. Beginning with a Studebaker Hawk at 12:50pm\, announcers will greet every car as it arrives at the Museum and share a little bit about the car and the driver/navigator team. \nRacers will stop at the Museum checkpoint and leave in the space of three hours as they journey across the country in a competitive controlled-speed endurance competition for a chance at a $150\,000 prize pool.  All cars involved must be 1974 or older.  This year’s race treks from Warwick\, Rhode Island\, to Fargo\, North Dakota. \nVisitor Museum Admission\nFor those wishing to visit the Museums this day\, we will only be offering Campus admission rates. Those are $16 for adults\, $13 for seniors\, and $9 for students aged 6-17. Service animals only inside the Museum Buildings please. \nVisitor Food\nFor visitors looking for bite to eat during The Great Race\, Tattoo Taco and Bonnie Doon will have food and ice cream available for purchase. \nVisitor Parking\nDue to the parking needed for racers\, the parking situation is a little different than usual at the Museums. SUMMARY:South Bend’s Bottleneck – Where River\, Rail\, and Road Crossed Paths
DESCRIPTION:South Bend’s early history is defined by the confluence and intersection of transportation: by river\, by train\, and by road.  Rivers\, rails\, and highways provided ready access to power and natural resources\, faraway markets for the sale of manufactured goods\, as well as leisure in the form of entertainment and excursions.  The manufactories founded along these routes created products and employment\, while residential neighborhoods\, parks\, and educational institutions were established between them.  Titans of industry negotiated with both State government and the City of South Bend to ensure networks of communication and commerce were consistent and uninterrupted. \nThe northern approaches to the City of South Bend contain natural topography and geography that result in what came to be known in the early 20th century as “The Bottleneck”\, leading to massive infrastructure improvements to overcome it.  These bridges\, viaducts\, and paths continue to be used today\, conveying people and material from one place to another. \nSouth Bend’s Historic Preservation Administrator Adam Toering will talk about the development of the near north side of South Bend\, the establishment and construction of bridges across the St. Joseph River\, the routing of rail to connect industrial manufacturing including how those routes both encouraged and limited development by creating ‘the Bottleneck’\, and how that legacy continues to impact the city’s growth today. \nABOUT SPEAKER SERIES\nThe Studebaker Museum Speaker Series\, presented by the Campisi Family Education Fund\, is held in the Wiekamp Auditorium. SUMMARY:The South Bend Watch Company: 1902 to 1929
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1800’s\, the railroads drove the need for high quality\, accurate timepieces. By 1900\, American manufactures were producing what were arguably the best watches in the world. The South Bend Watch Company came into existence in 1902 when a number of local business men\, including members of the Studebaker family\, purchased the Columbus Watch Company and moved the operation to South Bend. \nAlthough most of the company’s records have been destroyed\, the efforts of many individuals\, organizations\, local and national journalists ensured that the company has not been forgotten. General admission for the game is $12-$14 for each person. \nFriday\, May 6 at 5pm\nThe theme of DTSB’s First Friday is Studebaker Homecoming.  Enjoy Studebakers parked along Michigan Street from Washington down to E. SUMMARY:On the Future of Electric Vehicles & Transportation
DESCRIPTION:Peter H. Bauer\, Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame\, joins us to take our electric car exhibition into the 21st century.  This presentation discusses current and future trends in electrical transportation\, with a particular focus on battery-powered electric vehicles. The industry is currently undergoing a revolution not seen since the end of the 19th century. \nThere are essentially three areas that will forever change the vehicular transportation landscape: Electrification\, autonomy\, and connectivity. SUMMARY:Building a Better HUMVEE: Afghanistan\, Iraq and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Col. H. Donald Capps U.S. Army\, Retired\, explores how the IED (Improvised Explosive Device) affected combat vehicular operations in Iraq and Afghanistan through 2012 leading to the UAH (Up-Armored HMMWV) and the development of the MRAP family of vehicles and their deployment into theater. \nWhile the Jeep was a ubiquitous presence during World War II and symbolic of that war\, the HMMWV and the MRAP are the vehicles that featured prominently during the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. In general\, you will walk away with a better understanding of an area of military vehicular operations that is often overlooked and not often appreciated. \nLearn about the training support operations relating to these vehicles\, especially the development of Egress Trainers for the HMMWV and MRAP vehicles.  In addition\, several other items such as the employment of combat training simulators in theater will be looked at as well. \nAbout the Series\nThe Studebaker Museum Speaker Series is held in the Wiekamp Auditorium. In addition\, General Keane has advised presidents\, presidential candidates\, cabinet members\, senior government officials as well as members of Congress. \nIn his role with AM General\, General Keane works closely with AM General’s President and CEO\, Andy Hove\, and AM General’s parent corporation\, KPS Capital Partners\, to provide strategic oversight and counsel on the company’s strategic growth initiatives. \nCreated and presented by The History Museum and the Studebaker National Museum\, Manufacturing Victory is on view throughout multiple galleries\, creating a unique campus experience. The exhibit traces the region’s defense production over 160 years\, from early Studebaker wagon contracts in 1857 through the cutting-edge products innovated by AM General and others today. On view through February 6\, 2022\, the exhibit features such impressive vehicles as Studebaker’s horse-drawn army wagons and AM General’s iconic Humvee. Artifacts like the Oliver factory’s ammunition\, Bendix’s Talos missile\, and diving equipment made by Ball-Band provide a living document to the area’s long history of defense production. The exhibit also showcases the ingenuity of business leaders and line workers as they worked together to manufacture victory.
