{"id":11111,"date":"2022-09-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studebaker.priemerhosting.com\/studebakers-early-autos\/"},"modified":"2022-09-27T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T00:00:00","slug":"studebakers-early-autos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studebakermuseum.org\/studebakers-early-autos\/","title":{"rendered":"Studebaker&#8217;s Early Autos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Studebaker\u2019s expanded its corporate family significantly in the early 1900\u2019s in order to enter the automobile market.\u00a0 One if its first additions was the assets of the failing General Automobile Company of Cleveland, Ohio.\u00a0 The General plant produced Studebaker-branded two-cylinder automobiles in 1904-05.\u00a0\u00a0 As the market shifted to four-cylinder models, Studebaker teamed up Garford Company of Elyria, Ohio.\u00a0 Studebaker supplied bodies for the Garford-produced chassis and the automobiles were sold through Studebaker\u2019s dealer network.\u00a0 Studebaker acquired Garford outright in 1908.<\/p>\n<p>Studebaker entered into a similar arrangement with the Everett-Metzker-Flanders (EMF) company of Detroit in 1908.\u00a0\u00a0 EMF offered a broader line of cars than Garford along with much larger production facilities.\u00a0\u00a0 The EMF \u201c30\u201d and Flanders \u201c20\u201d models were a sales success, and Studebaker purchased EMF and its Detroit plants outright in 1910.<\/p>\n<p>At the conclusion of the 1911 model year, the Garford, EMF and Flanders badges disappeared \u2013 all cars now carried the Studebaker name exclusively.\u00a0 Studebaker sold its stake in Garford and sourced all of its automobile production at the former EMF plants in Detroit.\u00a0 Although automobile production began in South Bend in 1920, Studebaker continued to produce cars in Detroit until the early 1930s.<\/p>\n\n<h2>ABOUT THIS SERIES<\/h2>\n<p class=\"post-title\">Studebaker\u2019s Cousins was on display at the Museum in 2014.\u00a0 This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.studebakermuseum.org\/exhibition\/keep-truckin-american-pick-truck\/\">series of articles<\/a>\u00a0comes for the displays from that exhibition.<\/p>\n<h2>ADDITIONAL LINKS ON STUDEBAKER&#8217;S EARLY AUTOS<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emfauto.org\/index.php\">More E-M-F Information<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrhs.org\/blog\/then-now-garford-manufacturing-company\/\">More Garford Information<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Studebaker\u2019s expanded its corporate family significantly in the early 1900\u2019s in order to enter the automobile market.\u00a0 One if its first additions was the assets of the failing General Automobile [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11,"featured_media":11112,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[10,24],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-11111","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-special-exhibitions","category-studebakers-cousins"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.3 -
